2010 White Mountains Traverse
The White Mountains Traverse is one of the best and most challenging hikes in America. The White Mountains National Forest in northern New Hampshire is the location of many mountain peaks over 4000 feet. Mt Washington is the highest peak in this range, it is the highest peak east of the Mississippi, and it is famous for having some of the most extreme weather in the country. The highest wind speed ever recorded was measured on the top of Mt Washington. In 2006 Troop 131 completed the entire 53 mile traverse from Franconia Notch to Pinkham Notch during a 9 day event. In 2010 the troop will do a shortened 30 mile traverse from Crawford Notch to Pinkham Notch during a 6 day event and we will stay at the three highest huts along the way - Mizpah Springs, Lake of the Clouds, and Madison. The projected cost is less than $400 per person. More information about the White Mountains and the AMC huts can be found at www.outdoors.org. A couple of spots are still available for interested scouts and adults. A rigorous training program for all participants will resume in the spring.
